The result of a lithostratigraphic correlation is shown in the figure beside, where the lithological information and available electrofacies curves were used. But it is not a good result, because it does not show important details for the analysis of reservoirs or aquifers: the effective lateral variation of facies and the consequent variations in permeability and porosity.

Now see the detail correlation, considering the depositional systems. Now it is clear that not even half of the "São Sebastião Formation" is actually an aquifer, and that there are many impermeable or semi-permeable strata...

In a delta, for example, only the upper part (the "moutbar) has adequate properties to form a aquifer (or, if you wish, an O&G reservoir.).

For volume calculations and numerical modeling, for example, high resolution correlation is essential

to obtain a reliable result.

The figure here shows the same stratigraphic section,

but "modeled" with assigned property cells.

This is one of the results of applied sedimentology.
